Baby Audrina is finally home.

After a three and a half month stay at Texas Children’s Hospital that resulted when she was born with her heart literally on her chest, Audrina Cardenas was discharged with a good prognosis.

Audrina was born with her heart outside her chest -a rare diagnosis known as ectopia cordis . Heart surgeon Dr. Charles D. Fraser, Jr. surgeon-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital, plastic surgeion Dr. Larry Hollier and Dr. David Wesson, a general surgeon, performed a life-saving surgery on her second day of life to repair her heart.

Eight out of one million babies are diagnosed with this rare condition each year. More than 90% of those children do not survive.

Baby Audrina defied the odds, and her condition is excellent.

She left the hospital wearing an external heart shield to protect her heart as she grows. In a few years, she will once again have surgery to place a permanent protective shield inside her chest wall.

Dr. Carrie Altman, and the cardiology team at Texas Children’s Hospital, will monitor her progress regularly as she grows.

Welcome home Baby Audrina!
